Odissi & Thali : Manikya Veena

Intermediate-Advanced Odissi Classical Dance Intensive
Saturday, October 5th, and Sunday, October 6th

What is Odissi & Thali?

Odissi & Thali intensives are an ideal alternative for those who cannot attend regular weekly classes. This experience is entirely in-person and is structured into intensive one-day sessions dedicated to delving into specific aspects of a choreography or composition. During these sessions, we focus on breaking down every second of the piece into its multiple elements: padas (footwork), mudras (hand gestures), symbolism, tala (rhythm), and Abhinaya (expression).

We place special emphasis on the moments of rest and meals, which are essential for fostering connections among participants. The intensives take place in a warm and welcoming environment, where delicious homemade vegetarian thalis are served. These meals not only nourish us but also transport us to the essence of India through their flavors, aromas, and the relaxed conversations that accompany them.

Manikya Veena

This poem is a dhyana shloka from the Shyamala Dandakam, composed by the poet Kalidasa in praise of Matangi, a tantric form of the goddess Sarasvati.

Both deities, Matangi and Sarasvati, are associated with music and the energy (Nada) that flows within the body, symbolized by the playing of the veena. While Sarasvati represents traditional knowledge, Matangi embodies mystical and unconventional wisdom, connected to inner knowledge and the breaking of social norms.

The poem describes Matangi as the daughter of the sage Matanga Maharshi, holding a veena adorned with gems, with a beauty and eloquence that shine like a deep blue gem.

Participant Profile

This intensive is designed for dancers with prior knowledge of Odissi. Specifically, participants should be familiar with the basic step repertoire, such as Chowkas and Tribhangas, as well as traditional choreographies like Mangalacharan, Batu, or Stayee. Participants should have a solid grasp of basic postures and maintain an active and well-trained physical condition that allows them to sustain intensive practice throughout the entire day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear?

For these intensives, you need to come dressed in a practice saree,
leggings, and a choli (fitted blouse) or short-sleeved top.

Is it possible to attend just one intensive?

This intensive pack is thematic and designed to provide a deep and progressive learning
experience of the choreography. The program is divided into 2 sessions, with each session
complementing and expanding on the content of the previous one. For this reason,
it is not possible to attend just one intensive, as the learning is structured sequentially
and each stage is crucial to completing the choreographic piece. The commitment required
is to participate in both sessions that make up the intensive to ensure a
complete and coherent experience.

In which language will the intensives be conducted?

The intensive will be conducted in English with translation into Spanish.
